Before you start calling about your homes central A/C unit, though, be sure the thermostat is calibrated and working properly. That way you can determine if your unit really does have a problem or if it just has a poor connection with your thermostat.
After making sure your thermostat is working correctly, here is a list of the 4 most common a/c problems homeowners face with their units:
- Faulty Wiring– Haphazard or uncertified wiring between your unit and the circuit breakers can be dangerous and prevent power from getting to your A/C unit.
- Low Refrigerant (Freon)– This is the chemical that cools the air that goes through your home. Low levels of Freon most often implies there is a leak within the system. Any leaks should be located and repaired immediately.
- Outside fan is not working– The outside fan is responsible for drawing all of the warm air out of your home as it gets replaced with cool air. If this fan is not working properly then correct heat transfer cannot take place. This makes the air conditioning to overheat and eventually lead to internal damage.
- A frozen coil– Frozen coils are usually caused by poor air flow. Things that can obstruct air flow are old, dirty air filters and obstructions in the duct work.
